Searches for ‘Ozempic’ skyrocket 865% after new study finds that the medication can reduce heart attack risk

Analysis of Google search data reveals that searches for ‘Ozempic’ exploded 865% in the UK as of 14th May 2024, after new research by the European Congress of Obesity (ECO) found that taking semaglutide, the active ingredient in the weight loss injections Ozempic and Wegovy, could reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death due to cardiovascular disease by 20%.

The analysis, by weight loss clinic Simple Online Pharmacy, reveals that searches for ‘Ozempic’ exploded to over eight times the average search volume in one day – an unprecedented increase in Brits looking to find out more about the medication that could have a range of cardiovascular benefits and improve their overall health.

Addy Mohammad, CEO of Simple Online Pharmacy, commented on the findings:

“The recent surge in popularity of specific weight loss treatments has significantly heightened interest in such options over the past year, with numerous US celebrities endorsing these methods and their purported advantages.

Consequently, many individuals in the UK have been exploring whether they qualify for these treatments. This trend is primarily driven by the aim to reduce body weight, yet recent studies suggest there might be additional advantages associated with these treatments beyond mere weight management.

For instance, findings from ECO’s research indicate that semaglutide might offer cardiovascular benefits for people, irrespective of their initial body weight or the amount they have reduced since beginning the treatment.

The research shows that even those with mild obesity might experience enhanced heart health. Despite some criticisms regarding the use of these treatments, especially for purely aesthetic objectives, the interest in them shows no signs of waning. Furthermore, these findings might provide even greater motivation for individuals to pursue this treatment.”

Simple Online Pharmacy conducted the research and is firmly established as one of the World’s leading online providers of weight loss medication, having diagnosed, prescribed & dispensed anti-obesity medication to over 120,000 patients in the UK since 2015; more than any other online provider and with established operations in Germany and Australia making them one of only a handful of international players. In order to fully support patients on their weight management journey, Simple Online Pharmacy developed a weight care app, renu – the first online programme to combine medication, psychology, movement and nutrition to support all aspects of a patient’s weight loss journey.
